Xiaomi 14 ReviewThe Xiaomi 14 was officially unveiled in China on November 26, 2023, marking the brand’s next step in flagship smartphones. Shortly after, the global debut was held at Mobile World Congress 2024 on February 25, where Xiaomi introduced the Xiaomi 14, Xiaomi 14 Pro, and Ultra variant. Pre-orders opened that day, with deliveries commencing in March 2024. Let’s talk about the Xiaomi 14 which looks very nice and smooth. It is not very big or heavy and feels comfortable to hold. The smartphone is available in four striking colors – Black, Silver, Pink, and Green, catering to different aesthetic preferences. Its aluminum frame combined with a glass or silicon polymer back adds a touch of durability and elegance. The glass front is engineered to provide protection, though there is no specific mention of Corning Gorilla Glass. However, the overall design reflects Xiaomi’s focus on premium quality and attention to detail. One of the standout features of the Xiaomi 14 is its 6.36-inch LTPO OLED display. This high-quality screen can display 68 billion colors and supports a 120Hz refresh rate, ensuring smooth and fluid animations. With Dolby Vision and HDR10+ support, the display offers rich contrast, vivid colors, and an immersive viewing experience whether you’re watching videos, playing games, or browsing the web. The peak brightness of 3000 nits is exceptionally high, making outdoor visibility excellent even in direct sunlight. The screen resolution of 1200 x 2670 pixels with a 20:9 aspect ratio provides a sharp pixel density of 460 PPI, delivering stunning clarity for reading and media consumption. The multi-touch capability further enhances the user experience by making the device highly responsive to touch gestures. Xiaomi 14 offers multiple RAM and storage variants to cater to different needs. You can choose from 8GB, 12GB, or 16GB of RAM, which ensures smooth multitasking and efficient memory management. The device is also available in 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB storage variants, offering plenty of space for apps, media and files. Though the phone doesn’t feature a microSD card slot, the high internal storage options more than compensate for this, users who require additional storage space won’t feel constrained by the absence of an expandable memory slot. At the heart of the Xiaomi 14 lies Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset built on a 4nm process. This cutting-edge octa-core processor includes one Cortex-X4 core clocked at 3.3 GHz for high-performance tasks, five Cortex-A720 cores at 3.2 GHz for balance, and two Cortex-A520 cores at 2.3 GHz to handle efficiency-oriented tasks. This configuration ensures that the Xiaomi 14 easily handles multitasking, gaming, and resource-intensive applications. The smartphone’s graphics are powered by the Adreno 750 GPU, which ensures smooth gameplay and seamless rendering of high-definition visuals. Whether playing demanding 3D games or running graphics-heavy applications, the Xiaomi 14 delivers top-notch performance. One of the most exciting features of the Xiaomi 14 is its impressive triple rear camera system. All three sensors are 50MP, catering to different photography needs. Primary Camera A 50MP wide-angle lens with an aperture of f/1.6. This sensor has dual-pixel PDAF (Phase Detection Autofocus), laser autofocus, and Optical Image Stabilization (OIS), enabling sharp and clear shots even in low light conditions. Telephoto Lens A 50MP telephoto camera with 3.2x optical zoom and PDAF that captures detailed images from a distance with great precision, and OIS ensures steady zoom shots. Ultra-Wide Lens A 50MP ultra-wide camera with f/2.2 aperture and a 115 degree field of view that allows for expansive landscape shots and group photos. One of the most exciting features of the Xiaomi 14 is its camera system, which was developed in collaboration with Leica. The phone boasts a 50MP primary camera with a 1/1.31-inch sensor, a 50MP ultra-wide lens, and a 50MP telephoto lens with a floating telephoto design that allows for 3.2x optical zoom. The Leica color science embedded in the camera system delivers images with excellent color accuracy, contrast, and detail. Low-light photography has been dramatically improved, with the primary camera’s f/1.6 aperture and Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) ensuring clear, bright images in challenging lighting conditions. The telephoto lens also offers strong performance, capturing detailed photos from a distance with minimal distortion. Users can switch between Leica Authentic and Leica Vibrant modes, allowing them to experiment with different photographic styles. The front-facing 32MP camera is also excellent, capturing detailed selfies with accurate skin tones and sharpness. For those who love creating videos, the Xiaomi 14 supports 8K video recording with HDR10+ support, ensuring cinematic-quality storage. It also supports Dolby Vision HDR, 10-bit LOG video and 960 fps slow-motions recording in 1080p, making it a versatile option for casual and professional videographers. The front-facing camera is no less impressive for selfies, with a 32MP wide-angle lens that ensures sharp and vibrant self-portraits. It offers a highly customizable user interface with many options for personalizing the phone’s look and feel. The software includes features like Super Wallpapers, Always-on Display, and advanced multitasking capabilities such as split-screen mode and floating windows. One of MIUI 15’s strengths is its deep control over system settings, including battery management, privacy controls, and app permissions. However, some users might find MIUI’s abundance of features overwhelming, mainly if they are accustomed to more streamlined interfaces like stock Android or iOS. That said, the OS runs smoothly, and Xiaomi has made notable strides in reducing bloat ware compared to previous iterations. The Xiaomi 14 offers comprehensive support for modern network technologies, including 5G, 4G LTE, and 3G. With support for both Nano-SIM and eSIM or dual SIM, users can easily switch between different network providers or manage work and personal lines on the same device. The device also includes a robust set of positioning technologies including GPS, GLONASS, BDS, Galileo, QZSS, and NavIC, ensuring precise navigation no matter where you are. Powering the Xiaomi 14 is a 4610 mAh Li-Po battery, which is although non-removable and offers long-lasting performance. One of the key highlights is its 90W wired fast charging capability, which can charge the battery to 100% in just 31 minutes, according to Xiaomi’s advertisement. Additionally, the 50W wireless charging feature can fully charge the device in 46 minutes, which is impressive for wireless technology. Including 10W reverse wireless charging means using the Xiaomi 14 to charge other compatible devices. Audio While the Xiaomi 14 lacks a traditional 3.5mm headphone jack, it compensates with 24-bit and 192 kHz audio support, ensuring high-quality sound for those using wireless headphones or USB-C audio adapters. One omission is the lack of a 3.5mm audio jack, which can disappoint some users. While, on the other hand, the phone does include an IR blaster, and also allowing users to control their home electronics, however, this feature is becoming increasingly rare in flagship devices. Sensors The under-display optical fingerprint sensor, accelerometer, proximity sensor, gyroscope, compass, barometer, and color spectrum sensor add to the overall brilliant experience, making it a well-rounded device for casual users and tech enthusiasts. Xiaomi 14 combines a premium design, outstanding performance, and a versatile camera system with fast and reliable connectivity options. Its powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, impressive battery life, and super-fast charging capabilities make it one of the best smartphones on the market. With its bright, color-rich OLED display, extensive RAM and storage options, and superior 5G capabilities, Xiaomi 14 is built to deliver a top-tier user experience. Whether you’re into mobile photography, gaming, or simply looking for a high-performance phone, the Xiaomi 14 is an excellent choice. On the connectivity front, the Xiaomi 14 is future-proofed with WiFi 7, offering the fastest wireless speeds available today. It also supports Bluetooth 5.4, NFC, and 5G, ensuring users are equipped with the latest technologies. The Xiaomi 14 represents a solid refinement over its predecessor, bringing top-tier hardware, advanced camera capabilities, and future-proof connectivity in a compact form factor. Its Leica-branded cameras, crystal-clear display, and super-fast charging make it a compelling flagship. Pros
Cons
The Xiaomi 14 is priced to compete directly with other flagship devices like the iPhone 15 and Samsung Galaxy S24. In Europe, the Xiaomi 14 starts at Euro 1,000 for the 256GB version, with higher storage options pushing the price upwards. In India, the Xiaomi 14 is expected to launch at around INR 69,999, placing it in the same price range as competitors like the OnePlus 12 and the Google Pixel 8. The Xiaomi 14 represents an actual flagship experience with its stunning display, high-end performance, and Leica-enhanced camera system. It’s small but has excellent features, so it’s perfect for people who want a suitable device but don’t need a big one. While MIUI might not appeal to everyone, it is packed with features and offers high customization. With its competitive pricing and top-tier hardware, the Xiaomi 14 is a solid choice for those considering upgrading to a high-performance Android smartphone 2024. |
